July 18, 1951 – December 20, 2013

buchanan.jpgDuring his 62 years, Dr. Joseph Kenneth Buchanan lived a very full life. Among all of his professional success, his greatest source of pride was his family: loving wife, Debbie, and his beautiful twin sons, Connor and Jack.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, for the first four years of his life, Dr. Buchanan and his family (parents: Kenneth and Eileen, brother: James and sister: Pam) lived in South Africa. Once they moved back to the United States, they lived on the east coast and settled in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Highly educated and well trained, Dr. Buchanan graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland Dental School in 1984 with his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree. He then pursued and completed a graduate specialty degree in orthodontics from the University of California at San Francisco in 1986.

As an esteemed member of the professional dental community, Dr. Buchanan served as President and Board Member of the Napa-Solano Dental Society and as Chairman of the California Dental Association Communications Committee. He was also an active member of the American Dental Association (ADA), California Dental Association (CDA) and American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). He was also elected into the membership of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an international society recognizing outstanding contributions to dentistry.

When he wasn't working, Dr. Buchanan thoroughly enjoyed reading, exercising and spending quality time with his family. They loved traveling, music and watching sports together – especially the 49ers!

Dr. Buchanan often said he had the best job in the world – creating healthy, beautiful smiles for his wonderful patients. His devotion to the field of orthodontics and his unwavering generosity live on at Buchanan | Chun Orthodontics. We are honored to keep his memory alive.
